Nicky's Tips for Protecting Your Hospital Rights PDF Print E-mail

Are you protecting your hospital rights? We posed this question in our last newsletter, and 51 of your fellow readers responded. Over half said they didn't know where to begin.

In case you're like them, here are some tips from Nicky Grist, AtMP’s executive director:

First, follow this link to get the right forms for your state. Just reading the descriptions and the blank forms for your state can help you think through the important questions.

Second, think about how you want to be treated and who you want to speak for you and/or visit you if you're unconscious. This is actually the hardest step. To be perfectly honest, when I did it, the thoughts made me cry. But when I finished crying, I realized I had confronted the fear of being in such a vulnerable situation, and I could face the paperwork with a clear mind!

Third, fill out the forms. That could be as simple as writing two names: yours, and the person's who can speak for you. You don't have to use a lawyer, but your state might require a notary or witness.

Fourth, tell all the people who need to know, give them copies, and put your own copy somewhere that someone can find it.

That's it - done!
