Action
Campuses nationwide are hotbeds of critical thinking and political action. With that in mind, the Alternatives to Marriage Project (AtMP) calls on youth throughout the US to start campus chapters in an attempt to promote the interests of unmarried people and raise the consciousness of all people. Historically, the youth have played a pivotal role in advancing social movements, which is a testament to their strength. Furthermore, they are the inheritors of tomorrow's world, and as such, should be as empowered and informed as is possible, with the hopes that discrimination on the basis of marital status can eventually be seen for what it is: out of touch with reality and a violation of civil liberties and rights.

If you or somebody you know would be interested in starting a chapter on campus, let us know and we will do what we can to help. We envision chapters having a fairly autonomous but mutually supportive relationship with our national office. Here are guidelines as well as some ideas on what you can do to start a campus chapter:

Guidelines

  • Explicitly adopt AtMP's Mission Statement
  • Share the mailing list with the national office (signatories should understand that they are opting into AtMP's mailing list, which is fairly low-volume).
  • Share any media contacts with and get permission from the national office before publicly representing AtMP.
  • Check in with the local office before doing any fundraising or hosting any events.
Suggestions
  • Generally, AtMP recommends you (1) make plans, (2) carry them out, (3) collectively summarize your findings, and (4) synthesize them into new plans.
  • Familiarize yourself, your membership, and others with the demographic diversity of the unmarried population using information from the AtMP Briefing Kit and recent statistics.
  • Familiarize yourself, your membership, and others with the current issues being tackled by AtMP in the cultural and political arenas.
  • Attend outside events to promote AtMP and to broaden our support from and understanding of other groups (especially groups concerned with questions on family and relationship forms).
  • Collect signatures from sympathetic professors and students regarding the Affirmation of Family Diversity and marriage boycott.
  • Contact local media and encourage them to cover your chapter and its stance on current issues.
  • Create and maintain an independent website or a unique page on AtMP's website.
  • Organize fundraising events to pay for chapter costs and donations to the national office as well as to promote AtMP and your campus chapter.
  • Submit articles to AtMP's national newsletter based on your experiences.
  • Write letters to churches, community leaders, legislators, newspaper editors, etc., inviting them and their constituents to join the struggle for equal rights for unmarried people.
Let us know how we can help, and remember: be creative, be energetic-be the change you want to see in the world!
