| Meet an AtMP Intern: Diana Sarhan |
I was thrilled to accept the position as an AtMP intern. It has been a fascinating experience and I am grateful to have been a part of such a worthy organization. I found AtMP through a class I took at Pace University. I am a senior and I am a double major in English and Women's & Gender Studies. I enrolled in an internship class that is unique because it enables students to obtain credits for an internship. We were asked to get involved with an organization that promotes equality and awareness both locally and globally. This dynamic combination is what brought me to AtMP. They encompass these special traits and go above and beyond to assist those seeking help. I was privileged to be a part of the behind-the-scenes work that goes on to make AtMP so successful. My experiences at AtMP have been wonderful. I have an open-minded outlook on life and I enjoy learning about other people's experiences as well. We are all individuals who collectively can change existing stigmas and social distortions that are commonly spread. AtMP has advocated for every person's right to freedom of choice, especially when it comes to a major decision in life such as marriage. In March and April many people emailed common-law marriage questions through the website. Concerns like these are relevant to numerous people who seek advice on how to proceed with their specific issues. AtMP tapped extensive resources, including lawyers, to specifically engage with individuals and address their needs. I compiled a list of over 120 common-law questions that have been asked over time. Eventually that list will become part of a new FAQ section of the website. I found it to be a smart and proactive approach to truly helping people with their problems. If we all strive to contribute, in any way we can, we actually can stand up and make a difference in someone's life. AtMP understands that we all have specific needs and through a strong base we can continue to grow and reach others in need of information or advice. The possibilities for an organization like this are infinite. If we all take the call to ACTION and agree to participate whenever we can, we will all be contributing to the greater good of all our communities, near and far. So make sure if you are not receiving emails or updates that you check back with us to update your records and stay involved! Each person CAN and WILL make the difference to support a remarkable cause and in return feel good about advocating for human rights. I am honored to be involved with AtMP's tremendous efforts. I hope that everyone reading this will try to actively participate each day to respect other people's choices; and likewise make choices uninfluenced by outside opinions. Thank you to everyone who helped make this a wonderful experience and remember every little bit counts! Cheers! |
