Grassroots Action Campaigns PDF Print E-mail

Ending singlism and marital status discrimination is a high priority for AtMP members and people like you, and we are proud to help you speak out!  More decision-makers need to hear that it's just not OK to treat people differently based on their marital status or their type of relationship.

Check out members' recent actions below, and join our mailing list to receive action alerts as they happen.

We'll add action campaigns as often as we can.  If you have a campaign suggestion, contact us today!

Save health benefits for Michigan's unmarried families

The Michigan State Senate voted to take away health benefits from the unmarried families of state employees, including the staff at public universities. For this mean-spirited and costly decision to take effect, two-thirds of the State House has vote for it.

Hospital visitation for everyone

Draft federal regulations aimed to give everyone the right to see loved ones in the hospital, but fel short of the goal.  Dozens of AtMP members contributed personal stories and professional expertise to help AtMP write recommendations on how to fix the rules. And we won! Every hospital patient now has the right to receive (or deny) any visitors s/he wants.

Ban marital status discrimination in housing

Revelations about Supreme Court nominee Elena Kagan prove that Congress should amend the federal Fair Housing Act to ban marital status discrimination in housing nationwide.

Every child deserves a family

Some states and adoption agencies discriminate against potential parents based on their marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity. Unfairly rejecting some parents before the adoption process begins, means some children might never be adopted! The proposed Every Child Deserves a Family Act would require states and agencies to treat all children and families equally.

Marriage promotion won't end poverty

Policies that aim to help children should support all the types of families in which children really live. It is wrong to use Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) to pay for marriage programs. Government is literally taking money away from impoverished families and giving it to programs that tell them their families are not good enough.

Domestic partner benefits for federal employees

The proposed Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act of 2009 takes an important step towards increasing fairness in access to health care for federal employees who are in unmarried relationships. But it fails to include different-sex partners. Tell Congress to amend it to be more inclusive, and then pass it quickly!

NY Family Health Care Decisions Act

New Yorkers have fewer medical decision-making rights than most other Americans. A proposal called the Family Health Care Decisions Act would bring NY up to par by enabling family members - including domestic partners and close friends - to make vital decisions for incapacitated patients who have not completed advance directives.

COBRA coverage for domestic partners

The Feb. 2009 economic stimulus bill proposes to pay 65% of your health insurance premiums for a year if you lose your job. That's a great idea, and it should include everyone who is covered by an employer's health insurance plan. But as it stands now, if you're getting domestic partnership benefits, you can be cut off your insurance completely when your partner's job ends.

Health reform isn't universal unless it's marriage neutral

There are so many health care reform organizations, all trying different ways to bring down barriers to health care in the U.S. But hardly any of them are looking at bringing down the barriers of marital status. Tell your favorite organization to consider your perspective.

Hospital rights for all Florida residents and guests

A Florida hospital refused to let an unmarried couple be together during one partner's final hours, even though they had health care proxy documents. Tell Florida that visitation is part of health care.

  • Good news!  That hospital updated its policies, and President Obama instructed all hospitals to do the same.
