AtMP has confronted marriage promotion throughout the decade. Some of our more significant actions include:
Publishing the acclaimed report Let Them Eat Wedding Rings: The Role of Marriage Promotion in Welfare Reform . Originally written in 2001 and thoroughly updated in 2006, it has been taught in college classes around the country, distributed to elected officials, and cited in academic articles. Teaming up with an ad hoc coalition of academics and advocates in December 2008 to educate the Presidential Transition Team about marriage promotion. The coalition wrote a new policy paper, and also commented on the appointment of a new Assistant Secretary for Children and Families. Mobilizing members in Virginia in February 2009 to protest a proposal to include marriage education in the state's K-12 school curriculum. Drafting a letter to U.S. senators in January 2006 on the diversion of federal anti-poverty funds into marriage promotion. Publishing 'Babies Are Dying, But at Least Their Parents Were Wearing Wedding Rings'a press release in 2001 that condemns bonuses given to reward states for decreasing their percentage of births to unmarried parents, even when these same states had among the highest rates of child poverty and infant mortality in the country. These bonuses have since been phased out by legislators alarmed by concerns like ours. Releasing Boosting "Marriageability" -- A Tool for Family Diversity Activists? by AtMP co-founder, Dorian Solot, which examines whether "marriageability" is a bad word and concludes: maybe not, if it attracts funding to improve the quality of people's lives. |
