Internships at the Alternatives to Marriage Project PDF Print E-mail
AtMP often posts special internship opportunities at www.idealist.org - just type "atmp" in the search field to find our postings!

The Alternatives to Marriage Project welcomes interns during the summer and during the school year. It's a great opportunity to experience the inner workings of a small nonprofit organization, and to make a difference for unmarried people through our day-to-day work.

All interns assist with general office and clerical work, and may also assist with research, material writing and design, responding to informational requests from journalists and members of the public, organizational planning, and other short- and long-term projects, based on the organization's needs and the intern's skills and interests. Interns will have the opportunity to work both closely with staff and take on independent projects.

AtMP seeks interns who understand and support our mission, are hard-working, are able to successfully complete projects, and are comfortable using computers. Strong writing and marketing skills are a plus, but not required.

As a grassroots organization, AtMP is not able to pay interns. Some of our interns have been able to arrange for funding and/or course credit from their school. Time requirements are flexible, ranging from 2 to 25 hours per week during the school year. Summer and January-term interns generally work around 15-20 hours per week in the office, with opportunity for some additional work from home.

The AtMP office is located in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn, NYC, easily accessible by subway and bus. The office features one flight of stairs and a friendly cat.  Unfortunately, we are not able to assist with housing.

To apply:
Paste your cover letter and resume into our online form.  Or, fax a letter and resume to 718-832-7098, or mail it to AtMP, PO Box 320151, Brooklyn NY 11232.

Some past interns say:

"AtMP'ers link ideological support and concrete action; they link shared commitment and cohesive effort. Thanks to these links, I learned more about the inner-workings of a nonprofit and the nexus of helpful information generated when experts pool ideas than I have in any prior position."

- Michele Hirsch, Cornell University

"I've heard plenty of internship horror stories: from being imprisoned by three solid months of dreary data entry to being allocated projects that are too complex for the executive directors themselves. Not so with AtMP! I found a supportive structure that made me useful and that fully engaged me. I left feeling like I'd accomplished something and like I'd had ridiculous amounts of fun. I'd love to do it again."
- Luke Mechem, Hampshire College

"Interning for the Alternatives to Marriage Project was one of the most educational experiences I have ever had. Not only did I get to see the inner workings of a grassroots organization, but I also learned a lot about myself. AtMP also showed me that individuals can change the world; in a relatively short amount of time, AtMP has reached millions of people with its message. I am very excited that I could be a part of this fantastic project, and I would recommend this internship to anyone who has a sincere desire to be challenged and to learn."
- Nina Lanza, Smith College

"Working with AtMP helped me to understand and appreciate the day-to-day work required of a non-profit organization. It also showed me the importance of the existence of such an organization. I saw that many unmarried people truly appreciate and utilize the resources that AtMP provides."
- Anna Levin, Oberlin College

"The Alternatives to Marriage Project provided me with an excellent learning experience. They did a great job maintaining a balance between structuring the job to help me be effective, and giving me enough freedom to be creative and capitalize on the skills I already had. I would highly recommend this internship to anyone looking to work in the non-profit field, or passionate about equal rights for all people regardless of marital status."
- Chris de Beer, community member
