Having grown up in India in a society and culture steeped in tradition and strict norms and with constant pressure to conform, I was looking for an organization supporting singles and other alternative lifestyles. In 2005, I was thrilled to discover AtMP as its mission was broad and inclusive, did not promote one lifestyle over another, and advocated for elimination of economic and social discrimination based on marital/relationship status. I immediately signed up and in the last two years have been active in organizing local events, launching the Los Angeles area chapter, participating in media activities and briefly serving on the Board of Directors.
Discrimination based on relationship status is legal and thriving and affects millions of people, especially in the United States where we now have more single adults than ever before. I believe that this very important cause is under-represented and needs urgent attention. I am excited about generating awareness and ensuring that individuals are valued and respected for their contributions to the society regardless of their relationship status.
I am looking forward to learning and contributing towards the cause by working with a diverse, experienced, and talented group of activists who are committed towards affecting social change and delivering a better future for everybody.
I also volunteer as a member and officer of the Pasadena Chapter of Population Connection – a Washington, DC based non-profit organization addressing overpopulation and environmental issues. I enjoy reading, arts, music, theater, wine tasting, traveling, cooking, and of course a marriage-free lifestyle! |
