There are many ways volunteers can help keep AtMP rolling!

Volunteer opportunities include:

Newsletter Editor

May be done from any location with internet access.

We're seeking a new editor for Update, AtMP's newsletter! This is a volunteer position with significant responsibility and visibility. Producing Update involves lots of smart, dedicated volunteers and follows a predictable quarterly cycle of activity. Most of the activity is done by email, some by phone. The editor is responsible for the first two phases of each cycle: Content Creation & Content Production. Content creation involves: soliciting, refining and generating ideas for articles, recruiting volunteer writers, and doing some writing. Content production involves: setting deadlines and making sure writers send their articles & photos on time; editing articles for length & grammar; creating headlines, captions & abstracts; deciding the order of articles; and compiling it all electronically. All this probably takes less than an hour a week during the first two months of each quarter, and about 8-10 hours total during the last month of each quarter. If this is your dream job, send us a note!

Office Volunteers

Brooklyn area

Volunteers and interns in our office often perform very similar duties, which vary somewhat based on the current needs and the individual's skills and interests. See the internship page for more information.

Mailing Volunteers

Brooklyn area

AtMP sends out large mailings a few times each year, and we always need extra hands to help us stick, stuff, and seal. We provide the pizza!

Houseparty Hosts

This event can take place in location.

Alternatives to Marriage Project parties are just like any other party -- except that in addition to having a good time together, you give your friends the chance to learn a little about the politics of marriage and non-marriage, and an opportunity to help a great cause while they're at it. You plan a party of whatever size and style you like, and encourage attendees to make a donation of whatever size they can afford to our worthy cause. Contact us to request an Alternatives to Marriage Project's houseparty package!

Letter to the Editor Brigade

This job can be done by email from any location.

Articles about marriage, cohabitation, and alternatives to marriage appear in newspapers and magazines around the country every day. Letters to the editor are a great way to point out misleading or incorrect information, tell the truth about unmarried relationships and families, and let other interested readers know about the Alternatives to Marriage Project. Our Letter to the Editor Brigade is composed of volunteers around the country who are willing to write an occasional letter to the editor. Collectively, Brigade members make a significant impact on the voices that are heard in the American debate about families. As a Brigade member, we'll forward you articles we see that we think deserve comment (either praise or criticism), and you can also find your own articles in the publications you read. We can also send tips forwriting letters to the editor, and provide feedback or editing on letters if you like. Your time commitment could be as much or as little as you like.

Newsletter/Website Writers

This job can be done by email from any location.

Want to contribute short articles for this website and/or our newsletter? We can provide story ideas, and we also welcome your submissions and ideas. If you're interested in contributing your skills and opinions, contact us.

"My Story" Volunteers

This job can be done from any location.

AtMP maintains a database of unmarried people who are willing to talk about their lives with journalists who are working on articles or news pieces about marriage, cohabitation, and related topics. We think these real life stories are an important part of educating the public about unmarried relationships. We need a diversity of people willing to share their experiences: people who are single and in relationships; those who hope to marry someday and those who never will; people of all ages, races, sexual orientations, and geographical locations. If you would be willing to consider talking to the media about your experience (you can always decide on a case-by-case basis), please email us with your city and state (very important), phone number, and basic information about your situation that we can share with an interested reporter.

Professional Services

We are also in search of professionals willing to provide occasional pro bono services, including:

  • Marketing experts
  • Printers
  • Accountants
  • Grantwriters/researchers
